Netflix has teased fans with an unexpected 30-second clip of a sequel they've been craving for nearly three decades, complete with a glittering line-up of stars.

The sneaky preview dropped on Christmas Day (December 25) and peeled back the curtain on the long-awaited Happy Gilmore 2, the follow-up to the smash-hit 1996 comedy starring Adam Sandler. The original romp followed the shenanigans of a wannabe hockey player who turns to golf in a wild bid to rescue his grandmother's house.

Mystery has swirled around the second instalment, but this initial teaser shed light on the plot and offered a sneak peek at music sensation Bad Bunny and NFL hero Travis Kelce in their roles, reports the Mirror.

"It's great to see you back Mr Gilmore," says Kelce's character as Sandler's famously temperamental Happy examines a sports jersey.

Fans also got a glimpse of the reunion of Modern Family's Julie Bowen, reprising her role as Virginia Venit, Happy's love interest. She whispers to him that "We've only just begun," followed by a tender kiss sealing their connection.

Eagerly awaited by fans, the sequel to Happy Gilmore reunites key figures from the first outing. Scriptwriter Tim Herlihy, director Dennis Dugan, along with producers Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds are linked to the project.

The returning cast line-up features Adam Sandler reprising his role as Happy Gilmore, accompanied by Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit. Newcomers include music sensation Bad Bunny, real name Benito Martinez Ocasio, and NFL star Travis Kelce, though details about their roles remain under wraps.

For fans that need a refresher before the new film is released next year, the original Happy Gilmore ended with Adam Sandler's titular character succeeding in his golfing career and ultimately saving his grandmother's home.
