Empire hailed Rivals as a 'hedonistic riot' that's 'explosive in more ways than one', which leads to 'sendlessly enjoyable' viewing. Elsewhere, Radio Times said the drama is 'glamorous, lively and light-hearted' while also 'terribly soapy in all the right places'.

Special praise was given to Tennant for his performance, with the publication noting his 'chilling darkness'. It said: "A special shoutout has to go to Tennant who really does deliver on being the resident Rivals villain, pulling on the chilling darkness he has already so superbly demonstrated in series like Deadwater Fell, Inside Man and Des."
