Five people to receive SAR's top honour

Lawmaker Martin Liao and entertainer Andy Lau are among more than 500 people named to this year's Honours List for their contributions to Hong Kong. Liao and four others will receive the Grand Bauhinia Medal, the SAR's top award. According to a government statement, Liao, who also serves as the Legco convenor, was credited with coordinating lawmakers to support the government, enhancing Legco operations, and facilitating the passage of key bills such as the Safeguarding National Security Bill. The other recipients of the Grand Bauhinia Medal are Lau Siu-kai, consultant to the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies; Peter Lee, Henderson Land chairman and managing director; renowned engineer Lee Chack-fan; and Fujian community leader Lam Shu-chit. Twelve people will be awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star, including lawmaker Priscilla Leung and Sino Group chairman Robert Ng. Andy Lau, veteran journalist Lo Wing-hung and former Equal Opportunities Commission chairman Ricky Chu are among 24 people who will receive the Silver Bauhinia Star. One of Hong Kong's most-recognised singers, actors and film producers, Lau was praised for “his remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry and the community,” according to the government statement. The Bronze Bauhinia Star will go to 40 others. The presentation ceremony will be held later this year.
