Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins looked gutted during his club’s end of season awards dinner on Tuesday night, despite walking away with two trophies. The dinner clashed with Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham, a result which is likely to see Watkins’ beloved Arsenal miss out on clinching their first Premier League title in two decades.

Watkins has been in scintillating form this season and has bagged 27 goals and 13 assists in all competitions. His strikes have helped Villa secure a place in next season’s Champions League as Tottenham’s defeat on Tuesday means the west Midlands side are now guaranteed to finish fourth.

With Villa returning to the top tier of European club football for the first time since the 1982/83 campaign, the club posted a picture of players and manager Unai Emery celebrating during the awards ceremony. But Watkins looked glum in the background and refused to exhibit the same exuberance as others in the room.

Tuesday’s result means City have climbed two points above Arsenal at the top of the top-flight table. If the Citizens defeat West Ham in their final clash of the season on Sunday, they will lift the Premier League trophy for the fourth consecutive year. And that would leave Arsenal licking their wounds once again after putting themselves in the frame to land silverware.

During the 2020 London Football awards, Watkins was quizzed by the Sports Gazette about his future while he was still plying his trade for Brentford. And the striker explained: “That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a long shot. I’m an Arsenal fan so Thierry Henry was my [idol] - he’s unbelievable to watch. He was the idol growing up really.”

But after scoring against the Gunners last month, Watkins told Sky Sports: “I used to [support Arsenal]. I grew up supporting Arsenal, but it's a different story now playing against them. Not too much to say really.”

Watkins, who has been capped 11 times by England, has been a star player for Villa since joining the club from Brentford in September 2020 and has racked up an impressive 70 goals in 168 appearances for his current employers.

And his efforts during this campaign were recognised at his club’s awards dinner, which took place in the Lower Grounds at Villa Park, as he was named the players’ player of the season and the supporters’ player of the season.
