ITV The Chase viewers 'switch off' as they slam player for 'embarrassing' move

The Chase: First contestant takes the low offer

viewers fumed as they "switched off" just minutes into the programme. The ITV show returned on Wednesday (April 24) with a repeat episode which first aired in 2023.

welcomed Alex, Michelle, Nicky and Joe into the studio who hoped to walk away with some cash. First up to face Mark Labbett was 30-year-old Alex.

Alex, who hails from Dudley, got the team off to a good start after earning £4,000 in his cash builder round. The Beast tried to tempt him with a high offer of £35,000 as well as a low offer of £1,000 before Alex turned to his teammates for advice.

All three of Alex's co-stars urged him to play it safe with the £4,000 as he was the first contestant up and they didn't know what form Mark would be in.

However, Alex decided to ignore his teammates' advice. He told Bradley: "I told myself I wouldn't take a low offer but it's tempting. We don't know what form he's in today."

The former Coronation Street star responded: "Well I do. They're always on good form. Always." That appeared to sway Alex's mind as he declared: "Lock in the one please."

Mark supported the move as he quipped: "I think more people in seat one should do that." Although the Chaser was behind the decision, the same couldn't be said for viewers.

Infuriated by the decision, viewers headed to social media to announce they had "switched off" just minutes into the programme. Writing on X, one said: "None of his teammates congratulated him coz he’s a complete to**er! I am now switching the Chase off."

A second fumed: "Taking the lower offer when you’re first up is terrible!! £1000 is embarrassing unless you’ve already got like 50k in the pot." Another penned: "Watching Pointless instead, this is ANOTHER repeat."

A fourth declared: "If we have another low offer, I'm going" as someone else echoed: "First up and goes low pls get a grip." Alex was the first contestant who made it through to the final chase.

He was closely followed by Michelle, who took the team's total to £5,000. Unfortunately, Nicky let the pressure get to her as she was caught by The Beast during the head-to-head.

The final contestant to take on Mark was Joe. Answering four questions correctly in the cash builder, the 73-year-old added another £4,000 to the pot as he made it through to the final chase.

The trio put on an impressive display as they answered 17 questions correctly. But it was unfortunately no match for the Chaser as he caught the team with 24 seconds remaining.
