Bernardo Silva's costly penalty shootout miss has been mocked on social media with the midfielder being told his attempt was the 'worst penalty ever'. The Portugal international fired straight into the hands of Andriy Lunin down the middle as won the shootout 4-3 to reach the semi-finals.

After Ederson had denied Luka Modric, Bernardo stepped up to try to make it 2-0 to City at the Etihad. But he curled it straight at Lunin, who stayed still and caught the ball with ease.

Jude Bellingham then drew Los Blancos level with his 12-yard attempt before Mateo Kovacic was denied by Lunin to hand the away team the advantage. Lucas Vazquez, Nacho and Antonio Rudiger scored all of their remaining spot-kicks to put 14-time European Cup winners Real Madrid into the final four, where they will face Bayern Munich.

Though Phil Foden and goalkeeper Ederson both converted their penalties after Bernardo and Kovacic missed, it was not enough for the Citizens. The two teams had drawn 1-1 after 120 minutes of football, with Kevin De Bruyne cancelling out Rodrygo's finish after a 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu in the first leg last week.

Many on social media platform X were click to label Bernardo's penalty the worst they've ever seen. The defeat means the reigning European champions can no longer retain the incredible treble they managed last season.

But they can still win the Premier League for a fourth successive campaign, which they will be doubly determined to do after this setback. They also have an FA Cup semi-final to play against Chelsea at Wembley this Saturday evening.

City boss Pep Guardiola was without Erling Haaland and De Bruyne in the shootout after substituting the duo off in extra time. Shot-stopper Ederson stepping up to the spot for the hosts' final effort raised eyebrows but his spot-kick was arguably the best of the lot.

Rodri was another experienced player not to take a penalty. The Spanish defensive midfielder's 66-game unbeaten streak is technically not over, though, as the match goes down as a draw in the statistics because it went to a shootout.

Regardless, it is Real Madrid who are into the next round. They have now qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League 33 times. That is at least 12 more times than any other club with their final-four opponents Bayern next up on 21.

City centre-back Ruben Dias reflected to TNT Sports: "I don't know what to say. Frustrating. We dominated the whole game. You go to penalties. The effort was there. We had chances. It's a difficult one to take.

"You always end up doing everything to try to avoid penalties. That's what they wanted. The team was there. We fought, we had our chances but it wasn't our day. We had the chances. Sometimes the ball goes in, sometimes it doesn't.

Man City lost the penalty shootout 4-3 at the Etihad (Image: GETTY)"Now we have to look forward at what's to come in the season. We won't have much time to rest. It's a busy part of the season. Now is a time to be strong especially in the head. We're still in two important competitions."

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has now reached the semi-finals of the Champions League a joint-record 10 times as a manager and Jude Bellingham said: "It's relief. You put so much into the game. I've played against City before and they snatch it away from you. I was pretty much dead on my feet at the end.

"It's so difficult. They are continuously probing with the ball and move you around. Most teams would fall apart when City get on top of you but we stood up really well. I could never dream of how it started [his time at Real], just the feeling you get playing for the club - getting to put the badge on your chest.

"Long may it continue. Hopefully more nights like this. Our biggest strength is he [Carlo Ancelotti] finds a way to let a lot of boys play with freedom. We're so off the cuff. As a man he fills you with calmness and confidence. I caught him yawning and he said to go out and excite him!

"You have to see it as a responsibility not a pressure if you want to play for a team like Real Madrid. Today it came down to mentality."
