Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts icon is totally unrecognisable in glam snap

Coronation Street: Sue Nicholls says she 'doesn't want to leave'

icon Sue Nicholls looks almost unrecognisable in this throwback image from 1978. The ITV star is best known for her role as Audrey Roberts in the long-running soap.

The character made her Weatherfield debut back on 16th April 1979, meaning she’s been a key figure in the cobbles for 45 years. Although many will recognise Sue for her role in the soap, she was also another key character in another soap opera, Crossroads.

In a glamorous unearthed image of the star, Audrey looks worlds away from how ITV fans are used to seeing her. Posing as her character Marilyn Gates from Crossroads, the fresh-faced actress is donning a maid pinny.

Holding a silver tray with a kettle and cup, the actress has a large white bow on her hair as she smiles at the camera. With heavy eye makeup, Sue has her blonde locks at shoulder length with large curls at the bottom.

Sue appeared as Marilyn in Crossroads for four years between 1964 to 1968. During this, she sang the song Where Will You Be, which reached number 17 in the UK charts.

In another throwback image, Sue smiles on a motorbike while wearing a leather jacket.

Combining her long dark brown hair, the actress is smiling to the camera while posing as her character Joan Greengross in 1978. The actress was part of the BBC comedy series, The Fall and Rise of Reginals for only four episodes.

Although the actress has made multiple appearances on other shows, she’s remained a Coronation Street staple for four decades.

Speaking about her long-running stint in the soap in the past, the actress revealed she was initially supposed to feature for a week.

She told This Morning’s Sharon Marshall: “I was asked to come for a week and soon after that I was asked to come back.

“There was no question of ‘no thank you’ because I’d had such a ball all that first week.”

During her time on the soap, fans have seen Audrey have her fair share of dramas, especially with her on-screen daughter Gail Platt (Helen Worth).

Touching on working with her, Sue said: “I love her to death, I love doing scenes with her. When we fall out [on screen] we don’t fall out, it’s just a true family thing that happens in life. She's [Gail’s] not a good judge of men - mind you, I [Audrey] can talk!”

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
