Ange Postecoglou moans about VAR despite Tottenham benefitting in Liverpool win

Ange Postecoglou has questioned why there isn't more scrutiny over VAR from the English public following Stuart Attwell's unprecedented public announcement during Tottenham's Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg victory against Liverpool.

Lucas Bergvall's late goal secured a 1-0 win for Spurs at their home ground, setting up an intriguing second leg at Anfield.

However, controversy arose when Dominic Solanke's earlier goal was disallowed after a VAR check for offside, leading to referee Attwell making the first-ever public VAR announcement in English football.

Postecoglou, who has often criticised the use of technology in the sport, expressed his astonishment at the rapid changes within the game due to VAR.

"I’m really surprised with how people in this country easily let the game change so quickly," he remarked, adding that the game has changed more since the introduction of VAR than it had in the previous 50 years.

The Australian boss continued: "We never used to debate offsides, holding in the box. Did anyone really love the announcement today? Did that give anyone a buzz?

"We need to be careful and why do we want to change the game so much? I just thought people will be more protective of the sanctity of the game.

"I think there’s a lot of confusion at the moment off the basis of technology and I feel like why is no one speaking up about it?

"Especially in this country where you’re custodians of the game, you have a song which says it’s coming home, this is your game and it takes an Aussie from the other side of the world to ask about changes."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said that the match against Tottenham could have taken an intriguing turn had referee Attwell issued a second yellow card to Bergvall for his tackle on Kostas Tsimikas in the 84th minute.

Attwell opted to play advantage as Liverpool kept possession, also allowing Bergvall to stay on the pitch.

While Tsimikas was sidelined receiving medical attention, Bergvall managed to net the winner. Speaking on the incident, Slot remarked: "I think anyone would prefer the card was given than have advantage played 40 yards from their own goal.

"The other question is: was it reckless enough to play advantage and come back and say the tackle was still reckless? And enough to give a yellow.

"He had to tell everyone what his decision was but unfortunately he didn’t have to do it for this decision.

"What would have been more interesting is if he explained to everyone why he didn’t give a second yellow card instead of why he cancelled the goal. I know that’s not the rule."
