Sir Alex Ferguson has given his verdict on Manchester United's draw at Liverpool with a brief message to the club's players.

Ferguson was among the attendees at the funeral of Kath Phipps, the club's long-serving receptionist, on Monday. She worked for the Red Devils for over 50 years and was universally loved by players, managers and fellow staff.

A handful of the 400 guests inside the cathedral gave eulogies, according to the Manchester Evening News, with Ferguson taking the opportunity to speak at the pulpit.

At one point, he turned to United's first-team squad and said: "Good result last night. Well done." He then added: "Kath would have loved that."

United went into the game at Anfield as the clear underdogs but managed to salvage a point thanks to Amad Diallo's late equaliser. They drew first blood shortly after the break when Lisandro Martinez slammed the ball home from a tight angle.

It did not take long for Liverpool to turn things around, with Cody Gakpo scoring before Mohamed Salah converted from the penalty spot. However, the hosts were denied all three points when Amad found the bottom corner with a first-time finish.

Ruben Amorim was quick to praise the mentality of his players after the final whistle, saying: "I want to see my team play so much better, but I think the most important thing to address today is the mentality, that is the key for everything.

“Today, we were a different team not because of the system and not because of a technical aspect of the game. We faced the competition in the way we are supposed to face every day."

United skipper Bruno Fernandes echoed his manager's comments by challenging his team-mates to hit the same standards on a weekly basis.

"I think it is a really good result, we could have even won the game at the end, but we can’t be satisfied to be honest and I’m pretty upset," he said.

"If we show this today at Anfield against Liverpool, who is first in the league and has been probably the outstanding team in the Premier League this season, why can’t we do this every week?

"It’s frustrating for me because I think I did a proper performance and I think we need to be aware. We said it before the game, we need much more from ourselves to get something from this season. We need to put some pride out because it isn’t enough."
