Shetland fans demand BBC bosses 'call it a day' as season finale fails to impress

Shetland: Flashbacks of shooting infuriates viewers

Fans of the crime drama Shetland have said the show should "call it a day" after the BBC finale left them feeling underwhelmed. After nine weeks of following the mystery fans felt short changed and took to X to air their grievance.

One fan lamented the new characters writing: "Not exactly the most gripping series. And I don’t care about any of the characters. Bring back jimmy and Duncan! #Shetland."

Another agreed and didn't hold back in their comment: "This really has been the worst season of #Shetland so far. The writing is poor, the acting worse and it feels like the narrative has been strung out far longer than the story requires. Time to call it. A day."

A third viewer agreed raging: "Wasn't sure about the first series of the new Shetland. I think this will be my last, it's all over the place.#Shetland."

A fourth wailed: "I HATE it when the final episode and eventual resolution have absolutely nothing to do with the 8 previous episodes. This had better not be it… #shetland."

A fifth viewer was completely incredulous about the plot opining: "#Shetland is s****. We're expected to believe that a local government worker went into the office on a Friday night and worked until 2am. I could write a better script. Pish."

Somone else fet the show had changed hugely and had questions asking: "This series has been so far removed from previous brilliance. Is it a different writer this series? Did the writer leave when Perez left? Is it still based on the books? #shetland."

However it wasn't all hate. One fan pleaded for more next year having "thoroughly enjoyed" the finale.

"Well I thoroughly enjoyed that! Loving Ruth's character and feel like there's plenty we've yet to find about her. Tosh is taking to her new role of DI very well and Sandy and Billy are still Sandy and Billy. New series next year please! #Shetland."

Series nine of the popular rdetctive drama saw Ashley Jensen and Alison Calder play DI Ruth Calder and DI "Tosh" McIntosh respectively.

The finale revealed the killer to be Noreen Stack. She was trying to protect her family by covering up a rape committed by her husband Michael.

She confronted Annie who lunged for the gun she had, which went off, apparently accidentally, and killed her. Anton was drawn by the noise and Noreen shot him dead.

She then threw the gun into the sea and left young Noah in the house with his mother’s dead body, while she drove home with her own baby Finn sleeping in the car.
