DI Ray viewers say same thing as ITV series makes dramatic return

D.I. Ray: Parminder Nagra stars in ITV drama trailer

Viewers of DI Ray were all in agreement as they tuned into the first episode of the second series.

The ITV series, which made its TV debut back in May 2022 starring Parminder Nagra, follows Rachita Ray as she investigates high-profile crimes amidst a backdrop of systemic racism within the police force.

Weeks after her suspension, DI Ray was back on duty on Sunday (October 20) as the second series began with a tragic drive-by shooting of an innocent nurse outside a Birmingham hospital.

The leader of the Chapman gang was shot dead alongside a young nurse outside of a Birmingham hospital. The nurse was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, or so viewers are led to believe, but the murder of Frank Chapman hinted at an impending gang war.

However, before the drama unfolded, fans took to their keyboards to express their excitement at the return of the popular television series. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan wrote: "So glad #DIRay is back.", reports the Mirror.

Another said: "Good to have #DIRay back."A third person tweeted: :Thank you, @ITV for finally letting the UK watch series 2 of #DIRay.

Later in the episode, viewers discovered that DCI Kerry Henderson (Gemma Whelan) had fought to bring Rachita back onto the force and Supt Beardsmore (Ian Puleston-Davies) continued to thinly veil his racism and contempt for Rachita's return to the office.

She's been exonerated of any wrongdoing in connection with her fiance Martin's (Jamie Bamber) illicit activities, and Beardsmore has given her a mere "words of advice" for her "bullying" tendencies and failure to gel with the higher-ups. Yet, there was no chance for a breather or a casual cuppa, as the criminal factions were already plotting their vengeance for a murder before Rachita could even draft a preliminary report.

The sole witness to Frank's brutal killing was savagely attacked before Rachita's squad could get to him. After fruitless interrogations with the Chapman clan, the inspector turned her attention to questioning local shopkeepers.

During her inquiries, a shawarma chef disclosed the simmering discord between the Chapmans and the newly arrived Mochani family from Leicester. That very evening, the same chef faced intimidation by masked thugs, warning him to stay silent about the Mochanis.

Rachita dispatched Kwesi (Peter Bankole) to keep tabs on the Mochani's jewellery outlet while she and Clive (Steve Oram) surveilled Frank's memorial gathering. It wasn't long before it became apparent that the Chapmans knew they were under surveillance, although they remained oblivious to Kwesi's watchful eyes on the Mochani establishment.

The night took another dark turn when two masked assailants abducted Rav Mochani (Taha Rahim), bundling him into an anonymous van.

Rachita and Clive abandoned the wake to pursue the van, with Rachita refusing to slow down despite Clive's pleas. They were without backup during the chase, and a near-death experience on the motorway left Rachita cursing as she watched the van escape with Rav trapped inside.

Rachita is aware that Frank was murdered by someone he trusted and suspects the Mochanis' involvement. The pressing question is whether she can identify the triggerman before a full-blown gang war breaks out in Birmingham, and if she can do so without losing herself in the case once more.

The second series of DI Ray comprises six hour-long episodes - two more than its predecessor. The first episode of DI Ray season 2 premiered on Sunday, October 20 at 9pm on ITV1.

The following episode aired on Monday, October 21 at the same time, with the third episode scheduled for Wednesday, October 22 at 9pm. All episodes will be available for streaming on ITVX after the initial episode has been broadcast.
