It's not hyperbole to say many of these series have defined and dominated the horror genre within anime, earning spots on several 'best-of' compilations.

Take Tokyo Ghoul, for instance: decorated by IGN as ninth in their top ten horror anime, is heralded as a "beautifully animated, darkly depressing, and filled with violent action, this is an angst-soaked joyride through cannibal creatures and supernatural threats", reports the Mirror.

Thrillist has hailed Berserk as "one of the most cult-famous and difficult-to-access series, a true gem for those willing to take a few extra steps out of their way to find the original 1997 anime."

Buzzfeed has praised another entry: "The horror genre isn't new in anime, though this one seems to be a more mature Jujutsu Kaisen, so if you love that show and the horror elements that make it dark and fantastic, then you should be watching Chainsaw Man."

Higurashi: When They Cry also made it onto several lists, with GameRant stating: "the 2006 original and its sequel, Kai, have a few of the most iconic horror moments in anime, and they tell an overall engaging mystery story."

The Promised Neverland also caught the eye of WatchMojo, who noted that the series "delivers its scares through constant suspense and an ever-present feel that something could and likely will go wrong at any second."

Crunchyroll Premium is available free of charge for 7 days. Subscriptions cost £5.99 a month after the free trial.
