The Penguin is streaming now via Now TV (Image: NOW TV)

Colin Farrell is returning as Oswald Cobblepot for the next chapter in Matt Reeves' Batman saga - The Penguin - and it's available now on Now TV.

For once, British viewers won't be lagging behind the US in the race to watch the latest episodes, as they will be screened at the same time in both territories. The first episode is already available to stream online, portraying Oswald's desperate quest to cling to power in Gotham City - by any means necessary.

The delightfully sinister series is likely to have viewers gripping the edges of their seats - and they won't have long to wait for a follow-up, as episode two will start streaming from Monday September 30, at the admittedly slightly unsociable time of 3:20am. Yet what is it about the new crime thriller that has everyone enthralled?

First of all, the hugely popular Irish actor Colin Farrell will be making a dramatic return, following up from his 2022 role in The Batman. Viewers will have to wait and see whether the feared super-villain will thwart Batman himself, though the latter might not be taking up a starring role this time.

function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.setAttribute('src','https://live.primis.tech/live/liveView.php?s=118222&playerApiId=v118222');document.getElementById('ovp-primis').appendChild(el)} window.top.addEventListener('primisPlayerInit',e=>{try{if(e.detail&&e.detail.playerApiId==="v118222"){if(window.document.getElementsByClassName('jwplayer')[0]){e.detail.float('disable')}}}catch(e){}});window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',()=>{setTimeout(()=>{if(typeof flagTcfLoaded!=='undefined'&&flagTcfLoaded===!0){loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP flagTcfLoaded',new Date())}else{document.addEventListener("tcfLoaded",()=>{loadOvpScript() ExpressApp.Log('[Load] OVP tcfLoaded',new Date())})}},1500)})

Instead, the focus this time is on Oswald's sinister rise to power, which will be depicted over eight weekly episodes. To offset any confusion, Oswald has been given his unusual sounding name due to his distinctive waddle, his slightly portly belly and his beak-shaped nose.

Teasingly, producers have announced that Shohreh Aghdashloo (24, The Expanse) and Deirdre O’Connell (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Outer Range) will also be taking part - but in as yet undisclosed roles.

As speculation builds, Express.co.uk won't give the game away - but viewers will be in for an epic autumn season of viewing.

Treacherous crime boss Carmine Falcone might already have been assassinated - but with his murderous daughter free to roam the streets of Gotham, no-one knows quite which twists and turns will be in store next.

Meanwhile, The Penguin could be the first of many Batman spin-offs, as we recently reported.

Tuning into Sky/Now TV is the only way to view episodes as it will not be available on Netflix or any other rival streaming services. Happy viewing!
