MM6 Maison Margiela SS25 Dares to Cut Through the Noise

Maison Margiela sub-label MM6 presented a statement-making SS25 collection under dim industrial lighting filtered through a hazy smog and a thumping bassline in Milan on Thursday afternoon. On this bunker-like runway, the brand reinstated the deconstructive spirit ever-present in the house’s DNA.

While at once referencing Margiela’s early vision with hallmarks like translucent plastic-like textiles and intentional irregularity in construction, the collection also pushed the brand’s affinity for neutrals to the max with a dominating hue of titanium white. Some silhouettes were reminiscent of the early aughts, like tank top hoodies, tuxedo vests, and oversized sports shades. Hyper-distressed denim, an ongoing theme in the Margiela universe, was taken to extremes throughout the line: pieces like ripped skinny “jeggings” and extra deep V-necklines would likely feel dated if produced by other labels, but stripped down to pure form and passed through the hands of Maison, these styles find new life.

At a later point in the presentation, a tank top that resembles a wrinkled plastic shopping bag was worn by a model in threadbare jeans and high-polished gold accessories. One might have begun to read the collection as a rebuttal against fast fashion or the counterfeit culture that has replicated Margiela’s products ad infinitum – recreating forms without the meticulously considered content. Or, perhaps MM6 hopes to continue to pushing forth the tactile dialogue of deconstruction and reproduction that Margiela is founded on.
