Volkswagen Unveils Its Most Innovative California Van Yet

Volkswagen has introduced the latest generation of its iconic California camper van, hailed as the most innovative model to date. The new California seamlessly combines modern technology, enhanced versatility and sustainable options.

Built on the extended version of the Multivan, the new-gen boasts dual sliding doors as standard, significantly increasing flexibility and accessibility. This iteration marks a significant milestone as the first in its line to offer a plug-in hybrid drive coupled with an all-wheel-drive system, allowing for temporary electric-only operation alongside extended range capabilities.

Volkswagen will offer five distinct versions of the new California, each equipped with the classic pop-up roof: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean. These variants cater to a wide range of camper needs, from everyday use to extended travel adventures.

The interior of the new California has been redesigned for greater space and versatility. Individual rear seats replace the traditional bench, making it easier to transport items like bicycles. The pop-up roof now includes a front window and two side windows, all fitted with mosquito nets to enhance the camping experience.

Camper functions can be managed via a new control unit in the living area, the vehicle’s infotainment system, or a dedicated California mobile app. This integration of advanced technology ensures that managing the camper’s features is intuitive and convenient.

Powertrain options for the new California include a 150 hp turbo diesel, a 204 hp turbo petrol and a 245 hp plug-in hybrid. The hybrid model, coupled with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, marks the first time a California model includes such a configuration, offering versatility for both urban and remote adventures.

Staying true to its heritage, the new California is available in iconic two-tone paint finishes. Interior enhancements include removable storage pockets and practical features like the ability to switch off all interior lights with a single tap, improving convenience during camping trips.

Pre-sales for the new California camper are expected to start in June, with pricing yet to be shared at the time of writing.
