BBC Breakfast viewers fume as they issue the same complaint minutes into the show

BBC Breakfast: North Yorkshire Council set to ban apostrophes reaction

Jon Kay was joined on the red sofa by his co-star Sally Nugent who admitted, "I'm scared."

It comes after Nina Warhurst wrapped up her segment on train strikes and urged viewers to get in contact with BBC Breakfast.

Jon commented: "Sorry, there's no room in the inbox Nina. We're filling up with punctuation problems."

Nina jibed: "Quite right too."

"Oh, my goodness. Hundreds and hundreds of messages about apostrophes coming in," the stunned host remarked. "We will read some later."

Sally added: "I'm slightly scared."

Earlier in the programme discussion turned to the use of apostrophes as Sally reported one council has "decided to do away with them altogether" amid claims they "confuse computer systems".

It comes as North Yorkshire council has decided to not use apostrophes on street signs but one resident has opted to correct them with a pen marker.

Viewers quickly took to X and vented their frustrations as @paulymoxey wrote: "@BBCBreakfast hi I contacting you about the grammar on sign's I'm dyslexic and get easily confused so when I see sign's without comer then I send a message I don't know wether I need to put them in unless I'm using my phone and it aromaticly put them in so in my opinion we need."(sic)

@RLCoverdale: "Not sure why we’re all worried about AI taking over, when according to @NorthYorkshireCountyCouncil computers can’t even cope with apostrophes!"

@HelenSilvera7 tweeted: "@BBCBreakfast "Why oh why is putting an apostrophe in its correct place to indicate possession or plural so difficult? [angry face emoji] Don't dumb down grammar!!"

Correspondent Nina later took to social media and shared a clip of the apostrophe segment which caused uproar.

She captioned the post: "The end of civilisation."

The BBC Breakfast host's 47,000 followers flocked to comment on the post as @scott_expert said: "I would be the one with the black marker pen!"

@LynnKellyWigan tweeted: "This is shocking! Language is important, and I worry that this may be the thin end of the wedge! People will be going round the streets with marker pens and adding them, though hopefully in the right places."

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am
