Manchester United have reportedly put a £40million price tag on Mason Greenwood as the striker’s future remains up in the air at Old Trafford. Greenwood, 22, is currently on loan at Getafe and has revitalised his career this season, scoring 10 goals and notching six assists for the La Liga side.

Back in August, United announced they had reached a “mutual agreement” with Greenwood for him to leave the club, following protests from some fans over the prospect of him staying at Old Trafford. He had not played for the club since January 2022 after being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their involvement from the case. And having been given the opportunity to rebuild his career in Spain, the 22-year-old was widely expected to be sold on a permanent deal this summer.

But according to the Times, United are prepared to keep Greenwood if their valuation is not met. Juventus and Barcelona have been among the big European sides linked with bids, but whether they’d be willing to part with such a substantial fee remains to be seen.

The Red Devils are undoubtedly risking a fan revolt if the one-time England international does return to the fold. Supporters previously gathered outside Old Trafford and held up placards, urging club bosses to cut ties with the forward.

And following his minority stake purchase, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was non-committal in February when asked about the possibility of Greenwood returning to the first-team fold next season. “I can talk about the principle, I’m not going to talk about Mason,” Ratcliffe said.

“I’m familiar with it. The principle is the important one because we will have other issues going forward. You’re dealing with young people ‒ they’ve not always been brought up in the best of circumstances ‒ who are very talented, they’ve got lots of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“We need to understand what the facts are. Then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach it. Is he the right type of footballer? Is he a good person or not?”

The development comes amid reports that Ratcliffe is prepared to sell a host of players this summer, with United set to take a financial hit after failing to qualify for the Champions League. The position of manager Erik ten Hag has also been the subject of scrutiny following his side’s inconsistent campaign.
