Liverpool agree Feyenoord deal as Arne Slot on cusp of replacing Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool have moved closer to appointing Arne Slot as their new manager after reportedly agreeing a compensation package with Feyenoord. Slot is widely expected to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

It was claimed earlier this week that Liverpool saw an opening offer of £7.7million turned down by the Dutch outfit. Slot made public his desire to move to the Premier League club and The Athletic report that a deal has now been agreed.

The 45-year-old will succeed Klopp when the German steps down at the end of the season. Klopp endorsed the imminent appointment in his press conference on Friday, describing his likely heir as a “good coach”.

Slot led Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 20 years last season. He seems unlikely to repeat that feat with his side nine points behind PSV with only three matches remaining.

Liverpool’s interest in Slot only became apparent earlier this week. They had previously shown an interest in Xabi Alonso, who opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, and Ruben Amorim. The latter reportedly has admirers at West Ham.

Reds chiefs were reportedly keen to respect Feyenoord’s preparations for their Dutch Cup final against Nijmegen last Sunday, a match they won 1-0. Talks were subsequently accelerated in the days that followed that game.

Slot emphasised his desire to join Liverpool, telling ESPN after his side beat Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday: "It seems clear to me that I would like to work there. All I can say about it is that the clubs are in negotiations. I’m in the waiting room."

He added that he was “confident” the two clubs could reach an agreement. That step has reportedly now been completed.

Klopp then endorsed the appointment on Friday, saying: “What I like a lot about it is if he is the one then he wants to take the job – he’s desperate, excited, let’s go for it.

“I like the way his team play football and all the things I hear about him as a guy. Some people I know, know him, I don’t know him yet. Good coach, good guy.

“If he’s the solution for the club then I am more than happy. It’s not up to me to judge but it all sounds really good to me.”
