Lorraine Kelly's replacement reacts after Jane McDonald fights back tears over tragic loss

Jane McDonald gives update after deaths of mother and partner Eddie

Jane McDonald fought back tears as she spoke about her late mother and partner during an appearance on ITV's Lorraine.

The beloved presenter, 59, lost her mother, Jean, in December 2018, with her fiancé Eddie Rothe dying in April 2021 following a battle with lung cancer.

Lorraine's replacement, Ranvir Singh, addressed the on-screen star's loss, as she asked: "You've been through so much grief. First your mum and then your lovely, lovely man Ed, in a matter of a couple of years of each other. How are you?"

Jane looked emotional as the Cruising singer opened up about the loss a few years on as she admitted the grief "never leaves you".

She replied: " You have to find a way of dealing with it. It's not easy. It never leaves you either. Everybody thinks, 'Oh she's back on track.' No.

"I have to make a decision every morning about what my day is going to be like because you can either go that way [pointed to the left] or that way [pointed to the right]."

"I choose to go the positive," a teary-eyed Jane added.

The TV star said she had been experiencing "more good days than bad" in recent years but has come on "leaps and bounds" as she got back into work with touring and added it's given her purpose.

Ranvir went on to tell Jane about a moment when her late partner appeared on This Morning as the singer visibly brightened at the memory.

The Channel 5 star recalled having her make-up done when she looked up at the screen and saw her former flame, Eddie, who was a drummer in the band The Searchers at the time.

She told the make-up artist, "I used to go out with him" and feared saying 'hello' to him - in case he didn't remember her - but was persuaded to go and speak with him while in the studio together.

Jane gushed: "I had the most amazing 13 years with him. I think how lucky I am and how blessed I am to have had that time with him. I know real love."

She also revealed a song she wrote for Ed while he was ill that will be performed on her latest UK tour.

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am
