Peter Davison has paid a heartfelt tribute to his co-star following his character's poignant departure and ahead of the series finale. The actor, who was introduced as Anne Lloyd's (played by Barbara Flynn) romantic interest in the show, left viewers and his on-screen partner devastated when it was revealed that his character, Richard Baxter, was already married.

In an exclusive chat with Express.co.uk and other media outlets, Peter expressed his admiration for Barbara and hinted at potential ways for his character to re-enter the narrative of Beyond Paradise.

Discussing the possibility of Richard Baxter's return to the series, Peter remarked: "That is not sadly up to me but Barbara and I were about ways in which we can get me back into the series. I think that one of the last things he says to her is, 'Let me explain'."

He continued, advocating for his character's redemption: "I said, 'Yeah give me a chance to explain, come on, have me back so I can explain what was going on'. So you know on the face of it, he's just taking advantage or rather I don't know how much he's taking advantage. He's selling them this story so that he can you know, have lovely dinners and have these dates with Barbara or maybe there are other women as well.

"What his intentions are beyond that, it's certainly not clear. There's no way in which he seems to be trying to get money out of them or anything like that. So I think maybe he deserves a chance to explain what he meant."

The actor further commented: "Well, Barbara and I did sit there looking at ways in which we thought of getting the story to continue and that he would end up in jail."

"And then Barbara could go and visit him and have that romance that some women do with people in prison."

Peter, who has also starred in Death in Paradise alongside Kris Marshall, has previously worked with Barbara.

Discussing his return to the spin-off, the Doctor Who star revealed: "Of course, the main thing about Death in Paradise is it's filmed in the Caribbean.

"And Kris was heavily involved in that and as you said, it was the second show. I didn't have a scene with Kris in this episode. I saw him many times in the green room and when we were waiting to do scenes, but sadly, I had no scenes with him."

The synopsis for Friday night's final instalment of Beyond Paradise reads: "Humphrey and Martha's wedding day finally arrives, with the lavish affair organised by Anne - whose plans feel far grander than anything either of them actually wanted.

"Meanwhile, there's no rest for the Shipton Abbott team members who have to deal with the theft of a valuable museum piece and a nefarious pair of cyber criminals before they can join in the celebrations.

"With bride and groom running around and thieves running amok in Shipton Abbott, can the team wrap everything up in time to mark Humphrey and Martha's long-awaited union - or does fate have other plans?"

Beyond Paradise airs on Friday at 8pm on BBC One.
