Rangnick, who is currently in charge of Austria, has not managed a club since his brief spell at United prior to Erik ten Hag's arrival. However, he is thought to have emerged as Bayern's top choice after the German giants failed to land Julian Nagelsmann and Xabi Alonso.

Potential transfer targets have already been discussed, according to HITC, with Rangnick eager to sign two of his former United targets. It is said that Jeremie Frimpong is among the names on Bayern's radar, while Frenkie de Jong is also mentioned as a player of interest.

Frimpong was reportedly admired by Rangnick during the latter's time at United, but a move never materialised and he ended up staying at Leverkusen. The Red Devils are still reported to be keen on bringing him to Old Trafford, with his release clause of around £34million set to become active in the summer.

De Jong, meanwhile, was heavily linked with United for several years but was said to have made it clear that he had no interest in joining the club. He remains tied down to Barcelona until the summer of 2026, which suggests the Catalan giants will be under no pressure to sell him until the end of next season.

It remains to be seen if Bayern will be able to thrash out deals for Frimpong and De Jong when the bidding opens later this year. Rangnick would be delighted to have both players at his disposal if he joins Bayern, who are facing the prospect of not winning a trophy all season for the first time since 2012.

The 65-year-old recently confirmed that he was in talks with Bayern over the upcoming managerial vacancy, saying in a press conference: "They contacted us and I also informed the OFB about it. We have a very trusting relationship. My focus is on the Austrian national team.

"We are completely focused on the European Championships. I feel very comfortable here. At the moment there is no reason to deal with it intensively and specifically. The moment Bayern would say: 'We want you'. And then I have to ask myself: 'Do I even want this? I have a close and trusting relationship with my team'.

"It won't play better just because I say: 'I'll definitely be here for the next four years'. If I want to do something different, I will first discuss it with the OFB. It's about other things. Can I make a difference? Is there a chance of developing a team and being successful? That's what drives me."
