Netflix The Crown's final episode had to be changed after Queen Elizabeth's death

The Crown: Imelda Staunton on inheriting role of The Queen in 2021

The last episode of The Crown had to be re-written due to the Queen's death, according to actress Imelda Staunton.

Speaking on BBC's The One Show on Wednesday, the 68-year-old actress, who played the role of the monarch, admitted filming was 'long and sad' towards the end. Imelda added that it was a 'serious job' and 'serious responsibility'.

Imelda told of how when Queen Elizabeth II died back in September 2022, the Netflix team behind the hit drama decided to 'reflect' on Her Majesty's life - re-writing the final episode in the process.

She said: "Doing The Crown of course towards the end of the final six or eight months the Queen died. We were all really, really sad about that.

"That put an extra weight on it and in fact we did change the whole of the last episode to reflect that."

The TV star added: "I was spending a lot of time thinking about one's own death and to be doing something that is the antidote of that is wonderful for me because it was quite a long, sad time."

During an event earlier this month, Imelda said she had four years of 'having the Queen in her head' and often still carries her with her by wearing some of the outfits she had on the show.

The actress said: "It was quite a serious job and quite a serious responsibility carrying all that stuff.

"I finished doing that last May and June and shaking that off — so now I can be up and funny — it's just taken me that time.

"I was doing it day in, day out. I knew in 2019 I was doing it, and I started in 2021, so it was a long time. Four years of her in my head.

"The work that went in, you can see it on the screen, every detail from the set to the costumes. I'm wearing one of her shirts now."

Imelda previously explained that she had a few days off following the death of the monarch, which took place in the middle of filming for the series.
