Snowboard Olympian Aimee Fuller - 'I'm scared of spiders, let me do I'm a Celebrity!'

Nigel Harman sends thank you message to Katya

Snowboarding Olympian-turned-podcaster Aimee Fuller counts Strictly’s Katya Jones as her “best friend” but she’s in no hurry to do the hit BBC dance show as a celebrity.

Fuller, 32, who hosts the podcast Monday Mile, said: “I think I'll wait till she [Katya] retires. I will need my best friend's help.”

She admitted though they do the occasional step in their downtime.

Said Fuller: “I mean, we always have a little play around, but I'd say, for now, I've definitely taught her more about snowboarding than she has taught me about dancing.

“Coming from an extreme sport I’m more the elephant of the group. I’m more the breakdancer. When the music starts popping, I can drop the floor and do a few moves. But I'm not sure if that's really the Strictly scene.”

She prefers the rival celebrity show on ITV set in the Aussie jungle.

She said: “I think I'm A Celebrity would be a good one for me. Plus, I'm terrified of spiders. I’m perfect for it!”

Aimee and Katya have been filming a new podcast episode in Sydney.

“When we're [with Katya] in Australia, Katya laughs so much because she's not scared of anything like that and she's so strong willed. Whereas I'm like, ‘Oh no, what’s that?’ She’s, ‘Oh, just chill out’. She was like the ballsy one among us.”

Aimee’s podcast started three years ago. “It was off the back of lockdown when we were allowed to go out and walk with friends in a park. I was so sick of my day, sort of manipulated by Zoom calls and times in a diary where we were spending so much time on screens.

“I thought, ‘Let's take the conversation outside. Let's get people walking and talking’. And they do say the best conversations happen sideways and over 100 episodes later, here we are.”

She’s over the competitive snowboarding thrill, she said.

“I can say I'm happy to leave the adrenaline as I had 13 years as a professional athlete. Competing in multiple games of the Olympics, I had such an incredible ride as an athlete, but it's really nice to have another interest, and I feel incredibly lucky that I found another passion. There I can channel my energy.

“I started from the bottom and working my way up through the ranks in broadcast, sort of earning those BBC accreditations through hosting my own show like that. For me, it's given me another challenge, and that excites me.”

Monday Mile podcast, with guest Katya Jones, is available on all platforms.
