Jennifer Lopez - 'I sobbed when I read the Atlas film script'

Jennifer Lopez has spoken for the first time about Atlas, her new film role.

“The first time I read the script I sobbed,” she revealed.

“At first, I thought it was the pandemic that was making me emotional, but it happened again when we were shooting.

“I loved that this is a big sci-fi action movie, but at its core, it’s a story of friendship — and a love story, in a way.

“I always see everything as a love story, but this is a different kind of love between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances and teach each other how to be more human.

“It’s a really touching and moving piece.”

Lopez admitted to being a "big fan of sci-fi".

"It’s funny, but this film reminds me of King Kong in a way. Where you have this big monster — in our movie it’s an AI robot, of course — taking care of this woman and teaching her tenderness.

"I also love Aliens, and we talked a lot about Sigourney Weaver’s character as we were making this movie because this is kind of a one-woman show for so much of the movie. It’s just me in that cockpit, traversing the galaxy.”

Lopez spent much of the shoot inside a pod. "It was exhausting, but exhilarating. I was at an adrenaline level of 150 every single day. It was like doing a one-woman show. You’re just there, by yourself, imagining everything because it’s all green screen — there was no set to ground you. But the mech suit became kind of like a comfort place for me.”

Asked what she hoped audiences would take away from the movie, she replied: “I hope they have a great time with it, and feel how I felt when I read it. That it’ll evoke excitement and laughter, but that they’ll also come away realizing that you have to let people in.

“You can’t live your whole life thinking you can do it on your own. I think sometimes we forget that we need other people. And we have to cherish that.”

Atlas is on Netflix from 24 May
