Coronation Street star hoping for Ken Barlow 'love scenes' for fresh romance

Coronation Street's new star Helen Lederer is revealing her desire for some "Ken Barlow love scenes".

She promised ITV fans she'll "not kill him in the bedroom". The 69 year old actress, who portrays Wetherfield's newest romantic interest for Ken Barlow - Elspeth, said: "We do need to see the upstairs. It is about time there was some older love on Corrie."

Elspeth and Ken, who is portrayed by 91 year old Bill Roache, strike up a connection at a singles cocktail event, which quickly blossoms into romance. Regarding her bold character on the cobbles, Helen told the Mirror: "I am a woman who is bold and who has needs and I am just going to go for them."

Elspeth has only recently arrived in the soap, but she appears to have made Ken happy in her short time on the cobbles.

Helen, who once shared a brief romantic scene with Rik Mayall in the sitcom Bottom, has joked that her husband Chris Browne might feel a twinge of jealousy seeing her in another man's arms on television. However, she reassures that as a GP, he would keep his emotions in check.

She praised Corrie for being the "most substantial" and said it's a soap where you'd drop everything to take part.

Helen, who started her career as a stand-up comic alongside Mayall, Ade Edmondson and Ben Elton at London's Comedy Store, adds: "To be offered a part playing a role opposite William Roache is even more exciting. "The sketch-show veteran continues: "I had met him once before and I thought what a lovely man he was.

Helen appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning to share her hopes of returning to the cobbles for another date with Ken Barlow. She said her character could be a tarot card reader and vowed that she would keep the gossip churning at the pub.

Her debut proved to be very popular, with fans taking to X at the time of her debut to praise the star. One user wrote: "I'm already loving Helen Lederer (Elspeth) as Ken's new love interest." While another praised her as "superb".
