Steve Bruce has opened up on the 'worst time of his family's lives' after the tragic death of his grandson. On October 18, Blackpool announced that Bruce would not be in the dugout for the clash with Barnsley that day, following the tragic news that his four-month-old Madison had died.
And Bruce has now released a short statement.
"On Tuesday we laid my grandson Madison to rest," he said. "It's been the worst time of my family's entire lives and is something no family should have to endure.
"I'd like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the family to thank everyone for the tributes and messages from inside and outside the footballing world. It has touched us all.
I'd also like to thank David, Julian, and the owner Simon for their understanding and support. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday at Gillingham, and back at Bloomfield Road."
Bruce, 63, finished hs message by urging people to "Look after your loved ones." He signed off the statement by writing: "Best wishes, Steve."
Madison was the child of Matt Smith, Bruce's son-in-law, who played for Leeds United, Fulham and Millwall. The 35-year-old was most recently with Salford City before retiring in the summer.
Since Bruce has been absent from the dugout, the Tangerines have taken just one point from three League One games. The 2-1 home defeat by Barnsley was followed by a 5-1 loss at Peterborough.
On Monday, the club played out a 2-2 draw with Wigan. Having initially charged into the play-off places after Bruce took over, the club have now slipped back down to 16th, six points clear of relegation.
