Manchester United have reportedly added a new manager to their shortlist of candidates to replace Erik ten Hag. The latter is currently on thin ice after breaking his own record for United's worst start to a Premier League season.

The 54-year-old signed a new deal at United in the summer but already looks to be fighting a battle to save his job. It has been reported that he could be sacked if the Red Devils fail to take enough points from their next few games.

A number of potential candidates have been linked with the United job over the last few months, with Thomas Tuchel among them. He was sounded out for talks in the summer but is no longer in the running, having taken over as England manager.

United have responded by taking Tuchel off their shortlist and replacing him with another manager. According to Ajansspor, they have identified Turkey boss Vincenzo Montella as a candidate to succeed Ten Hag if the Dutchman is sacked.

Montella has taken charge of 17 matches since joining Turkey last year, recording nine wins, nine draws and five defeats. During the summer, he led Turkey to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 where they were beaten by the Netherlands.

The 50-year-old, who hails from Italy, has also managed several club sides including AC Milan, Sevilla and Fiorentina. He left Adana Demirspor by mutual consent just months before taking charge of Turkey last year.

Montella is not the only name thought to be on United's shortlist, with the likes of Gareth Southgate and Ruud van Nistelrooy having also been linked with the role.

Edin Terzic is another name to have been mentioned in connection with United over the last few weeks. The former Borussia Dortmund boss has been without a job since leaving the German heavyweights at the end of last season.

Only time will tell if United decide to make a change in the dugout or if Ten Hag will be able to turn things around. Earlier this month, he insisted that he had the backing of the club's hierarchy in spite of their poor results this season.

"We all made this decision to stay together in summer, as ownership group, leadership group," said Ten Hag. "Also we made the decision, after a clear review, what we have to improve as an organisation and how to construct a squad.

"All decisions made in togetherness, also knowing it would take some time. We are all there on one page, one boat, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff, players too."
