Jon Moss has bid farewell to the Scottish FA after a little more than one month as he embarks on a new chapter in his career. The veteran official was only appointed as the SFA's first VAR manager in August 2024.
While his next destination remains undclear, it's been revealed by Willie Collum, the SFA's Head of Refereeing, that Moss will be taking his expertise to a different continent. And his now ex-colleague was sad to be losing his new recruit.
The Sunderland-born official began his journey in the English Football League back in 2003 as an assistant referee and stepped onto the Premier League stage in 2011. After hanging up his whistle in 2022, Moss took up a role with the PGMOL before leaving the position earlier this year.
Reflecting on his time with the Scottish FA, Moss expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt statement: "I have loved my short time at the Scottish FA and already I believe clubs, players, managers and supporters see a significant improvement under Willie's leadership. Even though my time in Scotland has been short and sweet, I have loved working with the Scottish FA and the VAR team at Clydesdale House.
"I leave with only fond memories and a wish that I could have stayed for longer but this is an opportunity of a lifetime and I look forward to the new challenge, better equipped for it by my experience in Scotland.", reports the Mirror.
Collum expressed his disappointment at losing Moss so quickly but understood his decision, describing Moss' upcoming move as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." He also confirmed that the SFA is already on the hunt for his successor.
Collum also noted Moss being headhunted was a testament to the reverence he holds within the refereeing world. Moss was brought in to address the VAR issues plaguing Scottish football recently, and according to Collum, his efforts have "already strengthened our operation."
After stepping down from his role as a Premier League referee two years ago, Moss assumed the position of Select Group 1 Manager at the PGMOL. He maintained this role until March 2024 when he departed following rumours of disagreements with other officials.
As Moss prepares for a fresh start in his new overseas role, Collum wished him "the very best on his new adventure."
