The Observatory on Saturday issued the Red Rainstorm Warning as heavy downpours pounded Hong Kong. The signal, which took effect at 12.05pm, indicates that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 50 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue. The Observatory says an area of low pressure is moving across the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, and its intense rain band is affecting Hong Kong. It says whether the black rainstorm warning signal will be issued depends on the development of the areas of the rain band. "Heavy rain will bring flash floods, and flooding is occurring or is expected to occur in watercourses," the Observatory said. "People should stay away from watercourses. Residents living in close proximity to rivers should stay alert to weather conditions and should consider evacuation if their homes may become flooded." The Education Bureau confirmed that classes at all schools would be suspended on Saturday afternoon. Schools which are in session should continue until the end of school hours. They should ensure that conditions are safe before allowing pupils to return home. The Drainage Services Department urged members of the public to report flooding.
