BBC Breakfast guest Alex Ferguson 'tears up' as he shares sweet memory of late wife

BBC Breakfast presenter Nina Warhurst was joined by football legend Sir Alex Ferguson on Sunday (December 22) for a poignant interview one year after the death of his beloved wife Lady Cathy Ferguson.

The former Manchester United manager's wife passed away in October 2023 at their home in Cheshire.

Alex, 82, first met Lady Cathy in 1964 when the pair were both working in a typewriter factory. They married two years later in 1966. He has previously referred to his wife as ‘the key figure throughout my career’.

Following his glittering career in football, Alex has now teamed up with a charity which uses music to support people living with dementia.

During his BBC Breakfast segment, he put together a playlist detailing the key moments of his life and added a song that pays tribute to Cathy.

Nina said: "Let's listen to this track though because I think this one that you said reminded you of Cathy."

Alex listened to the song 'My Own True Love' from the Gone with the Wind orginal soundtrack, and looked visibly moved.

"When I went to see gone with the wind I was only 21 or 22, we were courting at the time,"Alex added when the song stopped playing.

Nina continued: "How's life now without Cathy now after all of those decades together?"

Sir Alex replied: "Well 50 years is a long time. She was a great wife and a fantastic mother, great grandmother."

"The person behind your success?" Nina asked, adding, "I once read that she was the most important influence."

Alex sweetly added: "Oh yes, the leader of the band."
