ITV has announced the premiere date for its much-anticipated new drama, Joan. The series, featuring actress Sophie Turner in the lead role, is set to debut on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday, September 29, at 9pm.

Viewers won't have to wait long for the second episode either, as it will air the following day, Monday, September 30, at 9pm.

Once the first episode is broadcast, the entire series will be available to watch on ITVX. Sophie is expected to mesmerise audiences in the eagerly awaited six-part drama, where she portrays the multifaceted character of Joan Hannington, a notorious jewel thief.

Penned by Anna Symon, the series is set against the vibrant and ambitious backdrop of 1980s London, delving into the complex layers of a mother, lover, liar, and thief. Based on the real-life events of Joan Hannington, this thrilling and emotional series promises to keep viewers gripped.

The cast also boasts big names such as Frank Dillaine, Kirsty J Curtis, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr, and Laura Aikman. The gripping drama is written by Anna Symon (The Essex Serpent), with Richard Laxton (of Rain Dogs and The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe) directing and Ruth Kenley-Letts (Strike) serving as the producer, reports the Mirror.

The six-part drama's synopsis tantalises viewers with a tale of crime and reinvention: "When her partner Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the chance to start a new life with her six-year-old daughter, Kelly. Delving deeper into the criminal underworld, Joan meets Boisie, an enigmatic antiques dealer whose allure introduces her to new levels of danger and passion.

"Through sharp intelligence, irresistible charm, and a talent for impersonation, Joan's journey is a high-stakes game of survival and reinvention. Every heist and every stolen diamond is driven by her singular purpose: to create a secure future for her daughter."

Sophie, famed for her roles in Game of Thrones and X-Men, expressed her enthusiasm about the project following the trailer release: "I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington's fascinating life story to screen in Joan. She is one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname 'The Godmother'.

"A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all while trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan launches on Sunday, September 29 at 9pm on ITV1.
