Dragon Age: The Veilguard lets you ally with several unique characters, all of whom become integral members of your party. As you continue to progress, you'll learn about their backgrounds. Perhaps you can help them with their plight and gain amazing rewards, too. Here's our guide on how to get Hero of the Veilguard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.

How to become a Hero of the Veilguard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The Dragon Age: The Veilguard Hero of the Veilguard status is unlocked for each companion when you complete their entire story arc. This means tackling all personal quests while advancing further into the campaign.

Note: You can check our other companion-related guides, including companion recruitment and companion romance.

What are the Hero of the Veilguard rewards?

Here's what you need to know about the Hero of the Veilguard rewards:

  • Near the end of a companion's personal story arc, you're have to make a decision as it relates to the mission's outcome or the character's trait.
  • You're then rewarded with a companion's heroic perk and legendary armor.
  • There are two variants, and the rewards depend on your choice during that mission. You can reload the latest "Temporary Decision Save" in case you prefer another set.
  • The Hero of the Veilguard status also gives a companion "plot armor" as it relates to the game's finale.

Note that there are cases when you have to make a choice as part of the mission itself, so you have to reload and take out the boss again if you want to check the other set of rewards. Conversely, there are instances when the choice is made after the mission--i.e. a private conversation at the Lighthouse--which makes things a lot less complicated.

Harding

Harding's Hero of the Veilguard moment occurs during her personal quest: The Heart of the Titan. After dealing with the boss, a cutscene will play and you have to make a decision.

Choice #1: Honor the Titans' anger.

  • Result: Harding contains the Titan's Shade by embracing her anger.
  • Perk: The Stone's Vengeance - Harding's weapon attacks are occasionally replaced with Titan Stones, which deal +20% damage and apply bleeding.
  • Legendary armor: Titan's Vengeance - Detonations also apply bleeding; detonations deal +25% physical damage against enemies that are already bleeding.

Choice #2: Remember who you are.

  • Result: Harding contains the Titan's Shade through her compassion.
  • Perk: Heart of the Titan - Soothing Potion's duration is decreased by 15%. Harding's detonation damage is increased by +25%; Rook and the other party member gain +20% damage and -15% cooldown reduction.
  • Legendary armor: Inquisition Spotter - All detonations are likely to disrupt affected enemies; chance for disruption applies to enemies near a detonation.

Neve

Neve can become a Hero of the Veilguard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard during a personal quest called The Returned Cultist Case. The choice happens just before the Aelia boss fight.

Choice #1: You bring Dock Town hope.

  • Result: Neve will be an inspiring hero.
  • Perk: Cold Justice - +1 maximum chilled stacks; +2% chilled effectiveness; +100% frozen duration.
  • Legendary armor: Investigator's Robes - Detonations permanently reduce cold resistance; detonations freeze an enemy if their cold resistance is at zero.

Choice #2: You protect Dock Town.

  • Result: Neve will be a shadowy protector.
  • Rewards: N/A - Unfortunately, we're unable to list down the rewards right now as we had lost our backup save. We'll keep you posted soon.

Bellara

For Bellara to become a Hero of the Veilguard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you must complete her personal quest called Through the Shadows. The good news is that you make your decision back at the Lighthouse as part of a private conversation. You won't need to repeat the boss fight if you want a different set of rewards.

Choice #1: Keep the Archive.

  • Result: The elves will keep the Archive's knowledge and risk it getting into the wrong hands.
  • Perk: Lingering Strike - Bellara's Replenish ability applies the weakened status to all enemies within six meters around you; inflicting weakened also deals shock and +200 electric damage.
  • Legendary armor: Archivist's Mail - Detonating a sundered enemy also detonates a nearby sundered enemy (30-second cooldown); enemies near the second detonation become vulnerable to electric damage.

Choice #2: Free the Archive.

  • Result: The elves will lose the Archive's knowledge forever and it will be safely contained.
  • Perk: Chain Lightning - Bellara's weapon attacks chain lightning against shocked enemies and deal +100 electric damage; +10% stronger shock effect.
  • Legendary armor: Detonations apply shocked to all enemies; detonations deal +100 electric damage.

Lucanis

In our playthrough, we did not see an impactful choice as it relates to Lucanis' personal quest called A Time to Kill. We can't confirm if this was due to the results of the On Blighted Wings/On Deadly Wings quest earlier in the game.

  • Perk: Demon of Defiance - +50% critical damage and +50% detonation damage; +25% ability damage to enemies suffering from an affliction.
  • Legendary armor: Crow's Tenacity - Detonations versus knocked down enemies also deal stagger to nearby foes; stagger from detonating is increased by +50% for all hostiles that are hit.

Davrin

Once you complete Davrin's The Profane and the Lost quest, you'll be able to make a choice to turn him into a Hero of the Veilguard. This decision regarding the fate of the griffons happens as part of a private conversation, so you won't need to repeat the entire boss fight.

Choice #1: They belong with the Grey Wardens.

  • Result: The griffons will return to the Grey Wardens and continue fighting evil.
  • Perk: Defender - Assan's abilities have -25% shorter cooldown; using Assan's abilities grants deflect.
  • Legendary armor: Grey Benefactor - Detonation damage counts as fire damage; +25% fire damage for each stack of burning on a target.

Choice #2: Become sentinels of nature.

  • Result: The griffons will find a home in Arlathan Forest as protectors of nature.
  • Perk: Battlemaster - Assan's abilities deal +25% damage; using Assan's abilities grant precision.
  • Legendary armor: Wildwood Benefactor - Detonating staggered enemies deals stagger to all enemies; +10% stagger from detonating for each opponent that gets hit.

Emmrich

Emmrich's major personal quest is called The Sacrifice of Souls. Once you've defeated the boss, a cutscene will play and you have to make a decision, which leads to him becoming a Hero of the Veilguard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Emmrich can turn into a lich but lose Mannfred forever, or he can revive Mannfred and forego his ambition to become a lich lord. The result of your choice here will play out in a shorter personal quest: Will and Testament if you become a lich, or Heir to the Dead if you revive Mannfred.

Choice #1: Become a lich.

  • Result: Emmrich will let Mannfred go to pursue lichdom.
  • Perk: Death's Caress- All of Emmrich's abilities apply necrosis when they deal damage; +25% affliction damage for the entire party.
  • Legendary armor: Lich's Vestige - Detonating a sundered enemy applies quietus; if a target already has necrosis or quietus, deal +200 necrotic damage.

Choice #2: Bring back Mannfred.

  • Result: Emmrich will sacrifice lichdom to bring back Mannfred.
  • Perk: Life's Embrace - Low health threshold is increased by 10%; +50% damage dealt by the entire party if you have low health.
  • Legendary armor: Graven Vestments - Detonations deal +50% damage and they make you invulnerable when at low health.

Taash

The choice to make Taash a Hero of the Veilguard happens at the end of her personal quest called Lair of the Dragon King. Once you've defeated the boss, you'll return to the Lighthouse and have a chat with Taash.

Choice #1: What did she want for you?

  • Result: Encourage Taash to pursue their Rivaini culture.
  • Perk: Rivaini Flair - +50% critical damage; +25% damage against high health enemies; +50% burning damage on the initial hit, which is reduced by 10% for successive hits.
  • Legendary armor: Rivain's Legacy - All detonations apply burning to all affected enemies; +150% fire damage to targets that are already burning.

Choice #2: What was she?

  • Result: Encourage Taash to pursue their Qunari heritage.
  • Rewards: N/A - Unfortunately, we were unable to check the rewards for this particular branch.

That does it for our guide on how to become a Hero of the Veilguard in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. These are just some of the rewards and perks that we've discovered, so we'll keep you posted once we learn about the others.
