In a groundbreaking leap for display technology, LG Display has introduced the world’s first stretchable screen that's capable of expanding up to 50% beyond its original size. Revealed at LG Science Park in Seoul earlier this month, the screen can be twisted, pulled and folded while maintaining functionality.
The 12-inch panel expands to 18 inches while preserving HD clarity with 100 pixels per inch and full RGB color. Built with a silicone substrate and micro-LED light source (40 micrometers), the display withstands over 10,000 stretches and extreme conditions. This version doubles the elongation capacity of LG's 2022 prototype from 20% to 50%. Its flexibility and resilience stem from an innovative wiring design that minimizes stress, making it ideal for integration into unconventional surfaces, including curved and irregularly shaped objects.
LG Display demonstrated potential applications including wearable displays for firefighters' uniforms providing real-time updates and automotive panels that adapt to curved surfaces. The screen's lightweight design also suggests possibilities in smart clothing and textiles.
While the stretchable screen remains in the prototype phase, LG Display’s achievement underscores its commitment to redefining the boundaries of display technology.
