and have found a system that works well for their relationship.
In an interview with GQ published on Tuesday, November 12, Munn, 44, explained that when she was six months pregnant with her and Mulaney’s first child she staged an intervention for the comedian. At the time, Munn had become more involved in Mulaney’s recovery but wasn’t sure of the status of their relationship.
The pair decided that Munn would give Mulaney, 42, random drug tests — which they still do today. “It’s like a relief,” Mulaney told the outlet. “I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”
Mulaney, who shared in 2014 that he had been sober since 2005, voluntarily checked himself into rehab in December 2020 for alcoholism and cocaine addiction. Mulaney completed inpatient treatment in February 2021.
Months later, Us Weekly confirmed his split from wife . Us confirmed his relationship with Munn soon after, and the pair welcomed son Malcolm in November 2021.
While celebrating nearly three years of sobriety following his 2020 relapse, Mulaney opened up about what he’s learned from his substance abuse struggles during an October 2023 appearance on The Late Show With Stepehn Colbert.
“I am a happy person,” he said. “I have, for some reason, set up various obstacles in my own way that have left me sometimes … pretty disoriented and pretty unhappy. But I am, at my core, a happy person. And it’s OK for me to protect that by living the life I want to live. … I don’t want to be the reason [my life] gets complicated.”
Less than one year later, Mulaney tied the knot with Munn. The couple welcomed their second child, daughter Méi, via surrogate and after Munn revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉,” Munn wrote via Instagram at the time. “I had so many profound emotions about not being able to carry my daughter. When I first met our gestational surrogate we spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel. Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true.”
She continued, “I am so proud of my little plum, my little dragon for making the journey to be with us. My heart has exploded. Méi (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese 梅💜.”
