Dennis Lo assumes office as head of CUHK

Professor Dennis Lo, the ninth Vice-Chancellor and President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said he will strive to enhance the institution's international status. Assuming office on Wednesday, Lo said he was honoured to take up the role, and would work hard to enhance quality in teaching, research, services, and innovation. Lo, who's also a molecular biologist revealed he would meet with his team this week, and arrange meetings with staff, students and alumni later. Lo said he would strengthen exchanges with the governing council that was reformed two years ago. The number of members were reduced from 55 to 34, while the ratio of external to internal members was changed to 2:1 from 1:1 in the past. "I think communication is very important. Therefore, our management team will have frequent and regular exchanges with the governing council," he said. "The most important thing is that all of us know that both the management team and governing council want CUHK to be better, and to enhance CHUK's international status." Lo noted that a documentary by the university's student publication on district-level care teams had caught the attention of society. He said the publication offered a chance for students to obtain hands-on experience, adding it was also a learning opportunity for them given their story had generated so many different opinions. Succeeding Rocky Tuan, Lo's term will run for five years.
