BBC Two fans 'heartbroken' over Maggie Smith tribute on late star's 90th birthday

Dame Maggie Smith dead aged 89

The BBC paid tribute to late actress Dame Maggie Smith on what should have been her 90th birthday today. The Harry Potter and Downton Abbey star passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on September 27, aged 89.

This evening BBC Two aired Maggie Smith at the BBC as Celia Imrie narrated a celebration of the life, work and TV appearances made by the star over the years. Other big names such as Judi Dench and Derek Jacobi made special appearances as they remarked on their favourite memories of their co-star and friend.

The special programme showcased a rich selection of classic clips from the 1960s to the 2020s, all demonstrating her wit, wisdom and unique ability to leave interviewers and audiences shaking with laughter. It also showed moments of Maggie's famously sharp tongue.

However, as viewers tuned in to the BBC documentary, fans were hit with fresh heartbreak as they were reminded that one of their favourite actresses was gone. Posting to X (formerly Twitter), one fan said: "What do you mean Maggie Smith died? She's one of my favourite artists and I missed it!??? I'm so sad."

"I’d forgotten that Maggie Smith died and now I’m sad again. Heartbroken," another added with a third writing: "I just remembered that maggie smith died and I am SAD."

"She’s like a compulsive read in the form of a person. And very beautiful. Reminds me of my Pilates instructor."

Another added: "Maggie Smith on the Beeb, Finally some good use of my license fee." While one more penned: "There's a programme on the 'tele' about Dame Maggie Smith and she was terribly attractive, don't you think?

"I dunno, every time I see footage of her being interviewed I think how attractive she is, and droll and interesting. A character. And quite stylish too."
