Call the Midwife fans were left reaching for the tissues on the second instalment of the BBC show’s festive special on Thursday (December 26).

The hard-hitting scenes offered up a slew of dramatic storylines, including a frantic search for Reggie and a dramatic birth scene starring former The Traitors contestant Maddy Smedley.

But one scene in particular had viewers in a frenzy as Christmas at Nonnatus House got underway and two characters reunited for the special Boxing Day episode.

Season 13 ended on a cliffhanger as Trixie Aylward said she would be moving to New York to be with her husband. But as fans eagerly awaited her fate on the show, she made an appearance in the episode alongside former nun-turned-nurse, Shelagh Turner. The pair were seen partnering up to help a family battle against appalling poverty, an incoming baby and the flu.

“Trixie and Shelagh sharing scenes again Laura Main is too but Helen George is incredible very proud to call her an inspiration,” gushed one fan online. Another penned: “Trixie and shelagh bathing and cleaning the mother her baby and including the siblings,” followed by a crying emoji. Another even dubbed them “team trixadette”.

The episode proved to be a big tear-jerker for fans as a frantic search for lost Reggie, who has downs syndrome, went underway. The emotional reunion after he was found proved to be too much for some fans.

“#CallTheMidwife never fails to make me weep. It's a real tear jerker!,” said one fan.

“@CallTheMidwife1 You've done it again! I'm in bits. You never disappoint,” another agreed.

More chimed in with: “Held it together till the end but then the tears came,” and “A beautifully warm, uplifting, enlightening and heart wrenching watch.”

Elsewhere, fans were hooked watching a heavily pregnant woman named Dilys whose family found themselves evicted just before Christmas and living in squalor with their three children as they battled the flu.

Fans were thrilled to have spotted The Traitor’s star Maddy, who had been working as a receptionist when she appeared on the BBC reality show, in the title role.

"Not Maddy from The Traitors being in Call the Midwife's Christmas Special #CallTheMidwife," one exclaimed.
