Marijuana growing bust in southern Taiwan breaks national record

Prosecutors in Yunlin County arrested five suspects after busting a marijuana growing operation they said is the biggest ever uncovered in the country’s history, it was announced today, December 4.

According to a press release from the Yunlin County Special Task Force, Yunlin County police received a tip-off in May this year that a man named Tsai was involved in cultivating marijuana in a mountain district of Tainan City. Police from Yunlin, Tainan, Nantou, Changhua, and Chiayi were involved in the subsequent investigation.

At around 4:00 am on December 2, a joint task force raided a three-hectare property in Tainan City’s Nanxi District. A one-hectare greenhouse was found to contain 1,766 marijuana plants, some as high as two meters tall. A raid on a house on a separate property nearby uncovered finished cannabis products and other equipment.

Five men were arrested in connection with the bust, including Tsai, 37, Lin, 29, Zhan, 54, and Zheng, 25.

Police described the operation as very professional, and estimate the total haul as being valued in excess of NT$1 billion (US$30.8 million).
