CE and mainland officials welcome navy vessels

Chief Executive John Lee has extended a warm welcome to two of the country’s navy vessels - a destroyer and an amphibious assault ship - that are making a port visit to the SAR. Earlier on Thursday, the arrival of The Changsha and The Hainan was greeted by boats from the Fire Services Department. Speaking at a welcoming ceremony, Lee said a slew of activities have been arranged during their five-day visit. He said he hopes Hongkongers can take the opportunity to experience the country’s achievements in national defence and military modernisation. “Crew members will take part in activities with local people and the SAR garrison. I believe this will raise awareness here of the nation's achievements in naval construction and development, while strengthening a sense of national identity and pride, especially among the younger generation,” he said. A number of mainland officials were also present at the welcoming ceremony, including Vice Admiral Wei Wenhui, deputy commander of the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, as well as director of the liaison office, Zheng Yanxiong.
