Outlander lead stars reveal exact length of Claire and Jamie's 'emotional' last scene

The One Show: Sam Heughan 'excited' by the return of Outlander

Outlander's leading duo Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have spilled the beans on their emotional final scene as the beloved Jamie and Claire Fraser.

In a heart-rending turn for season seven's second installment, Claire Fraser will be plunged into despair when she receives word from Lord John Grey (played by David Berry) that her beloved Jamie has presumably perished at sea.

Yet, ever hopeful, Claire is certain she'd sense if Jamie had truly passed away, a sentiment echoed by fans.

Heughan, hailing from Scotland, has been seen on set, hinting strongly that Jamie survives to see season eight, which promises to escalate tensions even further in the time-travelling saga.

Appearing on The One Show to give fans a glimpse of what's anticipated in the newest chapters, Heughan and Balfe shared about filming their last scenes together, amidst probing questions from presenters Alex Jones and Anita Rani.

A fleeting hand grasp symbolised their mutual nostalgia as Balfe confessed: "God, it was so emotional."

She acknowledged the inherently poignant nature of their scenes, adding: "I mean, it was an emotional scene anyway, of course, because a lot of them are."

Balfe also disclosed that the series has experienced several "unofficial" finales during production, detailing: "We've had a couple of wraps. We had the official one and then we had our final pick-ups and that sort of stuff."

She continued to describe the farewell: "But our official wrap we had a lot of executives came, there was a lot of the cast who came to the studio, the whole studio was full."

Balfe went on to estimate the length of their poignant final moments together: "And we had a seven minute scene or something?"

To which Heughan confirmed, "A seven and a half minute scene."

The actor described the scene as filled with "lots of dialogue. And the dialogue, as in Outlander, normally these scenes are, it was very dramatic.

"A lot of goodbyes in the scene but then it had this double meaning because we were also saying goodbye ourselves."

Balfe also shared a personal detail about her performance, admitting, "My face had started to do some weird... parts of my face twitched that I didn't know was possible," reflecting on the involuntary reactions she experienced due to the intense emotions.

While the finality of Claire and Jamie's scene has not been officially confirmed to be the last of the series, fans are advised to prepare for an extended and heart-wrenching conclusion when Outlander draws to a close.

Outlander season seven part two premieres on Friday, November 22, on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
