The sixth Waxahatchee studio album, âTigers Bloodâ, was released in March. In a five-star review, NME wrote: âThese songs offer a more adult and grounded perspective than ones like âLone Star Lakeâ and âEvil Spawnâ; theyâre about the person who feels like home rather than the one who gets your blood pumping. Itâs a nice counterweight that feels emblematic of âTigers Bloodâ â itâs a burning fire, and itâs a warm summer evening at once.â
It went on to be named as one of NMEâs best albums of 2024 so far. The album has also been nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album
NME spoke to Crutchfield ahead of the release of âTigers Bloodâ. Reflecting on the inspiration for the recordâs lyrics, she explained: âWith âTigerâs Bloodâ, I was just doing really well. Iâm in my mid-thirties and things are just quite peaceful right now. So it was really hard for me when I didnât have that clean narrative of what to write about.â
âI think what I was scared of was it being boring or mundane,â she reflects. âIâm at an age now where my life is less dramatic. When youâre in your twenties, itâs all chaos and melodrama, which is gorgeous fodder for songwriting. Now, it would feel really inauthentic for me to write about that type of thing. Thatâs just not really what my day-to-day life is like anymore.â
