Viktor Gyokeres sends blatant message to Man Utd and Ruben Amorim ahead of January window

Viktor Gyokeres can't stop scoring.

Ruben Amorim and the Sporting striker's other suitors would've been left drooling as he notched four goals in Sweden's 6-0 demolition of Azerbaijan on Tuesday. At this point, it would be more of a surprise if Gyokeres wasn't near the top of the new Manchester United head coach's transfer wishlist.

Since leaving Coventry City for Sporting in a club-record deal worth around £20million last year, Gyokeres has established himself among the world's most prolific goalscorers.

The 26-year-old has tallied 66 strikes in 68 appearances for the Lisbon giants, helping fire them to a second Portuguese title in four years last season.

He's started this term just as threateningly as he spent the previous campaign, already scoring 32 times for club and country.

Gyokeres' quartet of goals against Azerbaijan boosted his incredible total to 58 in 54 games throughout 2024.

Across the former Swansea City and Brighton and Hove Albion frontman's last nine outings, he has registered 17 goals and three assists.

Amorim, who played a crucial role in Gyokeres' transition into a world-class striker, has inherited a pair of strikers worth £108.5million at United.

However, there isn't a clear first-choice option between Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, given neither are scoring regularly.

Hojlund has notched just two goals in 16 appearances for United and Denmark this season. Meanwhile, Zirkzee also has only two to his name, having played 21 times for the Red Devils and the Netherlands.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Amorim targets Gyokeres in his first summer transfer window at Old Trafford, with the Swede expected to depart Sporting at the end of the season.

Amorim has ruled out raiding his former club in January out of respect after abandoning their efforts to retain the title for the first time in 70 years.

However, he hasn't dismissed suggestions that he could pursue a reunion in red next summer.

"I can't make fun of it right now; it was hard for me to leave. If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation, I'll get in trouble," Amorim told TNT Sports after Sporting's 4-1 win against Manchester City.

"This is my city, this is my country, so I'll respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season, and then his life maybe is going somewhere else."

Gyokeres remained coy himself, adding: "He probably has some strikers there already, so we'll see. No, he hasn't [asked me to join him].

"It's fun but nothing I attach any importance to because it's talk and nothing concrete. I want to finish this season at Sporting."
