Thom Browne Offers a Glimpse Into His Life and Career in "The Man Who Tailors Dreams" Documentary
On November 15, Thom Browne joined audiences in New York City for the premiere of The Man Who Tailors Dreams, which provides a behind-the-curtain look at the American designer's work and personal life. The 95-minute documentary was conceived by German director Reiner Holzemer, who is also the mind behind documentaries centered around other major designers like Dries Van Noten and Martin Margiela.
In an interview with WWD, Browne shared that Holzemer approached him with the idea of a documentary feature in 2021. "He was with us for almost three years," Browne told WWD. Throughout the multi-year shooting of the film, Holzemer documented the development of five different collections from Browne's namesake label, including one made during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to household names like Janet Jackson, Anna Wintour and Whoopi Goldberg, Holzemer offers a more intimate peek into the designer's personal life with an interview with Browne’s sister Jeanmarie Wolf. The documentary takes the viewer from Browne's humble beginnings in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to his college years at Notre Dame, and even his brief try at an acting career in Los Angeles.
The Man Who Tailors Dreams will have an additional screening this week at New York City's IFC Center on Thursday, November 21. Details on the next screening are available on the DOC NYC website.
