New British WWII series coming to Netflix with one very special guest

Winston Churchill: State funeral held in 1965

Churchill At War will hit Netflix in a matter of weeks, with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a special guest.

Boris is expected to talk about Winston Churchill's pivotal role in fending off the Nazi's during World War II. The documentary shares in detail how he "persevered until the end" to keep the British Empire together at all costs.

A new trailer released to tease the content of the show vows that viewers will hear Churchill "as never heard before" as his passionate speeches to the nation are screened. The narrator also adds: "This is Churchill's war like you have never seen before."

Another excerpt from the documentary includes an admiring speaker declaring him "the image of calm determination".

"He was supposed to be in the bomb shelter but he was up on the roof," the guest exclaims, as footage flashes up of him addressing the public from the top of a building.

Netflix has stated: "This captivating 4-part docuseries examines Winston Churchill's pivotal role in World War II and the formative events that made him an ideal leader for the era. Brought to life with his own words, the series explores Churchill's wartime strategy and the legacy that follows."

Although multiple guests and wartime experts are interviewed, the former Conservative leader, Boris, is perhaps the most famous.

He's also a veritable expert on the historical leader, having penned the book The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History.

The 432-page was first published in 2014, before former mayor Boris had ever become Conservative leader or Prime Minister.

However, in the book, he shared how he saw him as “the best speaker, the best writer, the best joke-maker" and "the bravest, the boldest and the most original” politician of his time.

Hachette's website clarifies that the book, published in association with Churchill Heritage "explores what makes up the ‘Churchill Factor’ – the singular brilliance of one of the most important leaders of the twentieth century".

Boris reportedly takes on the "myths and misconceptions" associated with him, as well as exploring his "contagious bravery" and "deep humanity".

"Fearless on the battlefield, Churchill had to be ordered by the King to stay out of action on D-Day; he embraced large-scale strategic bombing, yet hated the destruction of war and scorned politicians who had not experienced its horrors," he explained.

Now Boris is all set to take on the political figure again - but this time on the nation's screens.

Churchill At War will be released on Netflix on December 4.
