Richard Madeley in tears on TV as he's 'completely floored' by unexpected death

Richard Madeley in tears speaking about Terry Wogan's death

Richard Madeley was overcome with emotion on a poignant Channel 5 documentary celebrating his illustrious career alongside his wife Judy Finnigan.

Reflecting on his tenure at Granada and his time hosting This Morning, the Good Morning Britain anchor became visibly moved. However, it was the mention of taking over Sir Terry Wogan's Radio 2 programme following the broadcasting giant's death in 2016 that really tugged at Richard's heartstrings.

Confronting emotions live on-air, he confessed to listeners: "None of us saw this coming," as the world grappled with the loss of the beloved Children in Need host, who passed away at 77. Years on, the sorrow is still palpable for Richard.

Judy comforted her husband as he recounted the daunting experience of filling Wogan's venerable shoes.

During the emotional film, Richard recalled that fateful day: "It was all very emotional. It went fine, and the guests spoke beautifully, so I didn't have to do much, thankfully," reports the Mirror.

"Going off air, I was looking through the glass into the gallery. It was full of Radio 2 staff presenters, the head of the station, producers. It was full of them, all watching in silence."

He shared his internal monologue from that day: "I just remember thinking, 'I don't think I let Terry down there'."

Tears interrupted Richard's recollection as Judy reassured him with a soft assertion: "You did very well."

In the programme, Richard Madeley disclosed a charming behind-the-scenes detail from when he and Judy Finnigan started working together. He revealed: "I was sitting at my desk when this hand appeared on my shoulder and I looked up at this face and Judy said, 'Hi, I'm your Mummy' and I thought 'Whaaaaat?'" He added, "At Granada when someone new arrived, someone was appointed as their dad or their mum to show them round the canteen, the toilets and all that. So Judy was my 'mum'."

Sharing more about their early career and marriage, Richard let slip that although they wed in 1986, Granada initially balked at letting them work as a pair till they teamed up for charity two years later. Fortunately for fans, this led to their iconic partnership on This Morning and made television history.
