Amazon has launched a new mini-series that recreates the infamous Prince Andrew interview – and it’s available to watch for free. A Very Royal Scandal is billed as a ‘captivating retelling’ of the events surrounding the 2019 interview between Emily Maitlis and the Prince that ‘sent shockwaves around the globe’.

The three-part drama follows the action of Maitlis and Prince Andrew in the lead-up to the interview over the scandalous accusations he faced regarding his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre. It also covers the ‘ground-breaking’ event itself and the many questions left in its wake that would change their lives forever.

A Very Royal Scandal is fronted by Frost/Nixon actor Michael Sheen and The Affair star Ruth Wilson as Prince Andrew and Maitlis respectively. They star alongside Joanna Scanlan as Prince Andrew’s private secretary Amanda Thirsk, Alex Jennings as Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary Sir Edward Young and Éanna Hardwicke as Newsnight deputy editor Stewart Maclean.

Speaking to the BBC about his portrayal of the Prince, Welsh actor Sheen described the experience as ‘intense’. He said: “For me, personally, playing characters that are based on real people are a bit more intense than others and I enjoy that.

“I’ve tried to stay as true to the version of Prince Andrew that I have been able to research and see. Obviously there are huge restrictions on that, because unless you can meet the person and spend time with them and get behind the public profile, it’s very hard to know what they’re really like and what’s really making them tick.”

Sheen has previously played a number of real-life figures on the big and small screens, including football manager Brian Clough in The Damned United, David Frost in Frost/Nixon and Chris Tarrant in ITV’s Quiz. He added: “Ultimately, my performance, in this and in anything that I’ve done that is a real person, is a mixture of the version of the real person that’s out there, that’s accessible through research, and then the version of that person, the character, that’s in this story and in this script.”

A Very Royal Scandal is the latest dramatisation of the interview, following Netflix film Scoop, starring Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell. Now viewers can watch every episode of the mini-series absolutely free.
