Ivan Toney admits he is 'very impatient' as he waits for a start in England's run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals. The Brentford striker replaced an off-colour Harry Kane to score in the shootout win over Switzerland on Saturday.

Kane is England's captain and all-time record scorer, making it nigh on impossible for either Toney or Ollie Watkins to force their way ahead of him in the international pecking order. But Toney is doing his best, notching a crucial assist in the last-16 win over Slovakia and netting a superb penalty in the shootout victory over Switzerland.

Also working in the 28-year-old's favour is the fact Kane put in a disappointing shift against the Swiss and many fans were pleased to see him brought off during extra-time.

England boss Gareth Southgate has a decision to make ahead of the semi-finals, with Kane clearly fatigued after a long season with Bayern Munich and Toney raring to get his big chance at a major tournament.

"I’m very impatient," said Toney. "But I’ve had to be patient during this tournament. I know my time will come, whether that’s coming off the bench, starting or taking a penalty. I’ve just got to be ready for the time. I'm happy to play my part and patience is key."

Toney is a master from the spot, with his unique routine involving a slow run-up in which he doesn't look at the ball. "I always have my own routine, focus, and do what I always do," he added.

"I take my time and roll it into the back of the net. I never look at the ball. It’s my routine, it’s what I do. Some people might think it’s crazy but my routine is working and hopefully it can continue working."

England looked to be heading out of Euro 2024 when Breel Embolo poked Switzerland ahead in the 75th minute. But Bukayo Saka hit back brilliantly moments later, firing in off the post after cutting in from the left.

The contest was finely poised during extra-time, and England were eventually forced to settle for the lottery of penalties. Jordan Pickford saved from Manchester City's Manuel Akanji to give the Three Lions an advantage they never relinquished, as all five takers found the net to seal a triumphant day in Dusseldorf.
