Rasmus Hojlund releases statement as Man Utd dealt brutal transfer reality check

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has penned an emotional statement after Denmark crashed out of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 defeat against Germany on Saturday night. Denmark fell short against the host nation in Dortmund as Hojlund continued his goal drought in his first European Championships.

The Danes ran Germany close and were harshly disallowed an opening goal after a toe was offside in the build-up to Joachim Andersen's second-half strike.

Just moments later, more VAR drama worsened the blow after a point-blank cross hit Andersen's hand, leading to a 53rd-minute penalty.

Kai Havertz beat Kasper Schmeichel from the spot before Jamal Musiala produced a moment of individual brilliance 15 minutes later for his third goal of the tournament.

Hojlund started all four of Denmark's games against Slovenia, England, Serbia and Germany but was substituted in each of them after failing to find the net.

Kasper Hjulmand didn't receive the attacking firepower he would've wanted, watching his side score just twice in their four outings.

United's No. 11 had a few promising openings against Germany but showed his inexperience, lashing at chances, much to the frustration of his team-mates.

And he took to social media after Denmark's exit at the Westfalenstadion, reviewing his maiden Euros run-out.

"To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect from my first Euros," Hojlund penned on Instagram late on Saturday night.

"Supporting Denmark during a tournament was always one of the highlights as a Dane. Playing for Denmark was indescribable.

"I was so eager and wanted so badly to make our country proud. I texted one of my friends that I felt a bit guilty. It's a weird sentimental mix because there's also pride.

"Obviously, we wanted to bring the cup home, but the thing that will always bring me pride, both as a footballer and a Dane: We are red, we are white. We stand together, side by side."

Hojlund's Euro 2024 struggles re-affirmed United's plan to sign a new striker one year after his £72m arrival as Anthony Martial departs on a free transfer.

The 21-year-old has bags of potential and netted 16 goals in his maiden season at Old Trafford, but he can't do it alone and needs a partner to learn from.

Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee appears to be at the top of United's shortlist and has a release clause worth £34m. The 23-year-old Dutchman represents an attractive option to share the workload.

INEOS will be more convinced than ever to reinforce the club's striker department to support Hojlund's development as much as challenge him.
