Todd Boehly drops clear hint on sacking Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea manager

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly’s recent comments suggest that Mauricio Pochettino will keep his job this summer and be financially backed for a second season at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have faced consistent criticism throughout the campaign but are making a late charge for European football and could finish as high as fifth in the Premier League table.

Pochettino has not escaped any backlash for his leadership of a very young Chelsea squad and is set to be assessed by Boehly alongside fellow co-owner Behdad Eghbali and sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart at the end of the season.

Mitigating circumstances such as Chelsea’s lengthy injury list will likely be considered, though with potential successors such as Hansi Flick, Roberto De Zerbi, Gareth Southgate and Ruben Amorim all possibly available this summer the pressure has been on Pochettino.

But Boehly may have extended an olive branch and hinted that the Argentine will get the chance to continue leading their project, with the American businessman admitting how impressed he has been with Chelsea’s recent improved performances.

“We’ve seen the last two and a half games, at least in the second half at Aston Villa and Tottenham and West Ham where we played just beautiful football,” Boehly said at a Sportico conference in Los Angeles, according to The Athletic.

“It was so fluid, it was exactly the way we drew it up, when we came out of the back, built up and we moved up the pitch, very organised and the number of shots we had on board. In those two and a half games, you could really start to see what we were working on coming together. Even the commentary has changed over the last two and a half games. I’ve never seen anything change so quickly.”

Chelsea are unbeaten since their 5-0 thrashing at Arsenal, having drawn at top-four contenders Aston Villa before wins at home over London rivals Tottenham and West Ham, scoring nine goals in their past three games.

The Blues had been labelled the ‘Cole Palmer team’ for his one-man band heroics across this season, but the England international has scored just one of their last nine goals in the spell that Boehly highlighted.

The likes of Noni Madueke, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella all appear to have turned corners in their Chelsea careers, coming in from the cold to have significant impacts at the tail-end of the season, giving Pochettino a bigger chance at keeping his job.

Away trips to Nottingham Forest and Brighton come before the final day of the season at home to Bournemouth, where positive performances could land Chelsea a place in Europe next season, a significant boost to their finances and potentially even earn the head coach more time to grow the project, having made quite the impact on Boehly.
