He’s not going to stay out of the limelight for long is he? Jose Mourinho has been out of work ever since being sacked by Roma in January, but the ’Special One’ himself has since stated his desire to return to top-level management. A number of enticing vacancies are set to be up for grabs, and with former club Chelsea having reportedly ‘ruled out’ bringing him back in place of Mauricio Pochettino, Express Sport looks at five potential destinations for the Portuguese master…..

Bayern Munich

Mourinho has won league titles in four different countries, but don’t think for a moment his ego would let him pass up the opportunity to make it five. And after their run of 11 successive Bundesliga crowns was broken, the serial winner himself could be the perfect man to lead their response.

Having failed to persuade Xabi Alonso to leave Bayer Leverkusen and links to Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi cooling, the Bavarian giants are running out of options. Not only is the 61-year-old readily available, but his relentless desire to win - not to mention his previous work with Harry Kane - surely makes him a candidate.

Manchester United

He couldn’t, could he? A return to Manchester would have seemed a laughable notion when Mourinho was relieved of his duties midway through the 2018/19 campaign and yet, no manager at Old Trafford has matched his levels of success since.

With Erik ten Hag currently resembling a dead man walking, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly stating his ambitions to get the club back challenging at the elite end of English and European football, it’s not inconceivable he would turn to his man who has been there and done it all on both fronts. And how Mourinho would relish proving previous Old Trafford bosses wrong….

Al-Nassr

When you are blessed by your club signing Cristiano Ronaldo, you’re expected to deliver titles in return. For the second successive season Luis Castro will fall short on that front, and expect him to pay for it.

If there is one club that can match the financial demands of Mourinho, it’s Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. And given his pulling power, appointing the former Chelsea boss means star names will follow. It’s notion that makes him perfect for the model they’re craving to build in the Middle East, and there may have been more to his recent VIP appearance at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix than first appeared.

Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has already announced his intentions to walk away from Real Madrid after the 2024/25 campaign, and Florentino Perez won’t be following up with a small name appointment. A return for Jose to the Bernabeu has been touted before, and get ready for the rumours to resurface again.

The prospect of getting stuck in psychologically to Barcelona icon Xavi is one Mourinho would relish. And a shock announcement of pre-contract agreement midway though next season would be fitting for a man never shy of taking centre stage.

West Ham

Once upon a time, there would be more chance of Jose Mourinho receiving a Christmas card from Arsene Wenger than there would be of him taking the reins at West Ham. But his last two jobs at Tottenham and Roma were both considered against the grain for a man synonymous with handling clubs within Europe’s elite.

But if no so called super-powers make contact, how Mourinho would love one final opportunity to upset the apple cart. And he’ll know that delivering so much as a League Cup would cement god-like status with Hammers fans.
